General considerations....
The interpretation of radiographic images is essential to dental diagnosis and
initiating the appropriate treatment plan.
X-ray images must be able to reflect a number of unique conditions
as they provide valuable information for the general practitioner plus
other specialty fields including endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics,
pedodontics and implantology.
To meet these requirements, dental radiographs must be able to:

To improve the quality of your x-ray film, make sure that you are using adequate safelights. A proper safelight provides ample lighting during processing, yet it is safe for sensitive films. Safelighting that is too bright will fog the films.
Recommendations for Safelighting:
• a safelight filter is recommended for use with both intraoral and extraoral
dental films.
• place safelight at least 4 feet (1.2 m) away from working surface.
• check for cracked or faded filters.
• keep safelighting exposure as short as practical.
Another way to make sure that your x-ray film quality is good is to use proper solutions. You should follow the manufacturer's recommendations for proper preparation of the solutions. To keep the solutions clean, change every 3 to 4 weeks under normal conditions. ("Normal" use is defined as 30 intraoral films per day.) Heavy workloads may require more frequent changes. Developer and fixer solutions should be replenished daily.
